Isaiah 61:3

“and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor.”

You're staring at the same spot on the wall. Or maybe at the ceiling. The ache you're carrying feels like a permanent resident, a weight that's settled into the bones of your story. It's the chapter you keep rereading, the one marked by loss or disappointment or a grief that hasn't found its name.

That weight makes sense. The story feels stuck here, in the ashes of what was burned away. You're allowed to name the mourning, the spirit of despair that feels like a worn-out coat you can't take off. This isn't a failure of faith—it's the honest texture of being human in a broken world.

Right now, in this breath, a different story is being told over yours. It's a larger narrative, one your pain is held inside of, not one it defines. Listen to the promise: '...to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.' This isn't a distant future maybe. This is the plot, already moving. The exchange is happening. The ashes in your hands—the regret, the loss, the 'what if'—are being met. Not ignored, but transformed. Beauty for ashes. Joy for mourning. Praise for despair.

You are inside that story. You are the 'them.' The rescue isn't about erasing this hard chapter, but about writing the next one with a different ink. Your life, even the scarred parts, is 'a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor.' You are being rooted, becoming an oak of being made right, not because you powered through, but because you are held in a narrative of kindness that turns mourning into morning.

Right now, the garment of praise is being draped over your shoulders, light and sure, replacing the heavy coat. The oil of joy is being poured, softening the edges of the ache. You don't have to manufacture it. You just get to stand there, in the middle of the ashes, and receive the crown.

You are a display of splendor. Held in a story where beauty comes from ashes.

A prayer for today

The words won't come easily tonight, God. I'm holding these ashes—the things that burned down, the hopes that turned to dust. I don't know what to do with them. But You see them. You see the mourning, the spirit of despair that feels so familiar. I'm bringing the ashes to You because the promise says You trade them for beauty. I'm bringing the heaviness because You trade it for a garment of praise. I am planted by You. My roots are going down into a story bigger than this chapter. Your kindness is the plot twist. Your rescue is the turning of the page. Thank You that I don't have to understand the whole book. I am held in the narrative. The beauty is coming for the ashes. That is enough. Amen.
