Hebrews 12:2
“fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Friday afternoon. The week's final chapter feels messy, the plot unresolved. You're staring at a blank page in your mind, trying to script a better ending for that conversation, a neater solution for that problem, a clearer path for next week. The cursor blinks, waiting for you to type the perfect words that will make everything make sense.
You don't have to write the next sentence. The pressure to author a satisfying conclusion—to tie up every loose end by your own wit—is a weight you were never meant to carry. The story isn't yours to finish alone.
'Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.' Read that again. The pioneer—the one who went first, who blazed the trail through the impossible thicket. The perfecter—the one who completes what he starts, who brings the narrative to its good and beautiful end. His hand is already at work on your page. His pen is moving, scripting redemption into the plot twists you never saw coming, weaving purpose into the paragraphs that felt like filler. He saw the joy set before him, even through the cross, and he sat down because the work was finished. Your chapter is being written by the same author who knows the whole story, who loves the main character—that's you—with a fierce, unending kindness.
So you can stop drafting. You can close the mental document. The gripping tension in your shoulders, the frantic search for the right words—it can all soften now. You are not the sole author of your life. You are a beloved character in a story whose ending is already guaranteed, already good. Your only job is to rest in the narrative being written around you, for you. The pen has been taken from your tired hand. The next line, the next page, the final chapter—it's all in good hands. You can breathe.
A prayer for today
Naming it: the pressure to write my own ending. Naming the truth: Your hand is already writing. God, I lay down the pen. I stop trying to author a future I can't control or edit a past I can't change. You are the pioneer. You are the perfecter. This story is Yours. I am not the writer here; I am the one being written into a narrative of rescue. My frantic plans are being held by You. My uncertain tomorrow is being scripted by Your kindness. So I rest here, in the middle of the sentence, trusting the Author to finish what He started. Thank You that the work is done, and the ending is secure. Amen.
