John 7:38

“Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”

You’re doing the math again. Mentally subtracting hours from the day, energy from your reserves, patience from your supply. The calculation always ends the same: not enough. The fear is so logical. If your life force is a shrinking well, every demand is a bucket lowering in, threatening to hit bottom. Of course you guard the last drops. Of course you ration your kindness, your attention, your presence. It makes perfect sense to live like something is running out.

The anxiety that you’ll be drained dry isn’t a character flaw—it’s a survival instinct. When you believe your resources are finite, hoarding is the only sane response. The clench in your chest, the hesitation to give, the voice that whispers 'save it for later'... it all flows from that single, understandable belief: that what you have must be protected because it cannot be replenished.

But what if the premise is wrong? What if you’re not a well, but a spring? Jesus offers a different kind of math: 'Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.' Rivers. Not a trickle you must meter out, but a current that moves. Not a static pool you defend, but a source that is sourced. This isn’t about you digging deeper or trying harder to produce more. This is about connection to a supply that doesn’t know the word 'drought.' The living water isn’t a reward for good management; it’s the nature of being connected to the Source. Your fear of scarcity is heard and met not with a scold, but with an invitation into a different reality. You are not a container to be emptied, but a conduit. The love, the strength, the peace—it flows through. It is meant to move, not to be stockpiled in a dark, anxious place.

So let that old, logical fear rest. The equation has changed. You are not subtracting from a dwindling sum. You are a point where a river emerges, fresh and constant. The giving doesn’t drain you; it simply proves the stream is real and it is yours. A spring, bubbling up from an endless deep.

A prayer for today

I don’t know how to pray out of abundance. My instincts are all scarcity. I’m so used to counting and conserving. But You say there’s a river. I bring You my dry calculations and my fear of the empty bucket. You are re-writing the source code of my soul. You are the endless deep, and You are connecting to me. I am becoming a place where living water moves. Thank You that I don’t have to protect what You promise to flow. My cup isn’t just full; it’s overflowing because You are the fountain. Let that truth sink in deeper than the fear ever did. I am held in the current of Your kindness. Amen.
