Psalm 23:2-3
“He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.”
Maybe you did not choose to stop. Maybe your body gave out, or a door closed, or the exhaustion finally won. And your first reaction was not relief — it was frustration, or guilt, or the quiet dread that everything will unravel while you are down.
Psalm 23 uses a word worth sitting with: "He makes me lie down."
Not invites. Not suggests. Makes. Sheep do not lie down on their own. They are too nervous, too watchful, too convinced that stopping means danger. A shepherd who makes his sheep lie down is not punishing them. He is doing for them what they cannot do for themselves — creating the conditions where they can finally rest.
The green pasture was always there. You kept running past it.
"He refreshes my soul." That word refreshes is something the shepherd does, not something the sheep earns. It is already waiting in the quiet, in the stillness, in the forced pause you did not ask for. What feels like an interruption is, from His side, a kindness you could not have given yourself.
A prayer for today
You made me stop, and I was angry. But I see the pasture now. Thank You for the forced halt. I am lying down. I am drinking. Amen.
