Psalm 127:2

“In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves.”

Most nights you lie there running the tally. What got done, what didn't, whether you did enough to justify stopping. It feels like rest belongs to people who finished — and you never quite finish.

The Psalmist has a word for that kind of thinking: vain. Pointless. "In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat — for he grants sleep to those he loves."

Grants. Not pays. Not rewards. Grants — the way you give a gift to someone you love, no strings attached.

God doesn't review your to-do list before deciding whether you've earned a night of rest. He gives sleep to the people He loves. You are one of those people. Not because you finished. Just because you're His.

Rest is not a wage at the end of a long day. It is a gift from a Father who loves you. You can close your eyes right now, list unfinished, because He says so.

A prayer for today

I haven't finished everything. But I am finished for today. I accept the gift of sleep. I trust You to keep the watch. Amen.
