Psalm 107:14

“He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and broke away their chains.”

We've all had those seasons. The ones where something — a regret, a fear, a memory — wraps itself around your heart and won't let go. You can feel its hold, tight and familiar, like a fist clenched for so long you've forgotten how to open it. Maybe you've even started to believe you deserve to carry it, that this weight is just part of who you are now.

That feeling makes sense. When something has held you for a long time, its absence can feel stranger than its presence. The idea of letting go sounds good in theory, but in practice your hands don't cooperate. You've tried. And the fact that you're still holding on doesn't mean you failed — it means the grip is stronger than your willpower alone.

Here is what the scripture says: 'He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and broke away their chains.' Look at who is doing the work. Not them. Him. The chains were broken from the outside. The people in that story didn't will themselves free. They were brought out. This is the same story you're in right now. You don't have to force your own hands open. God is the one doing the loosening — patiently, one finger at a time. You are not being asked to release your grip. You are being shown that the thing you've held so long is already being taken by Someone stronger. The letting go is His work, not yours to perform.

Breathe in. The air is different here, outside the old grip. Breathe out. Your empty hands are not a failure. They are free.

A prayer for today

Thank You for this quiet moment of noticing. I feel it—the slow, gentle work of Your fingers on mine, loosening what I’ve held so tightly for so long. I’ve believed that letting go was my job, that I had to pry my own hands open. But You are doing it. The chains I thought were permanent are broken. The darkness I thought was home is behind me. I am led. I am unbound. I am here, in this new space of breath, learning that my empty hands are not a failure but a gift. They are free to receive what You’ve always been giving. Thank You. Amen.
