Isaiah 43:18-19
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”
You want to be free of it, but you keep going back to edit the draft. You want the page turned, but your finger keeps finding the old chapter. Both are true.
That ache to revise the past, to find better words for a story that's already been written—it makes sense. You've been believing that a better explanation could change the ending, or that one more defense could finally make it all make sense. The weight of that unfinished argument, that unresolved scene, is a real thing you carry.
Picture this: you don't have to knock. The door to that room is already closed. 'Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.' That's not a command to try harder. It's a declaration that the work of remembering and rehearsing is complete. The chapter is finished. The ink is dry. The need to explain it, defend it, or make anyone else understand it—that need is already done.
And here is what springs up in the space where that story used to live: 'See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?' This isn't about you manufacturing a fresh start through positive thinking. This is about a kindness you didn't earn quietly doing its work beneath the surface, like a seed cracking open in dark soil. While you've been staring at the last page, a green shoot has been pushing through, reaching for a different kind of light. The new thing isn't a demand; it's a gift. It's already happening. You are being rescued from the loop of your own history.
So you can stop telling that story. To yourself. To the empty room. You can close the book and leave it on the shelf. The record of what went wrong doesn't define you anymore. You are defined by what is springing up, right now, in the quiet space after the last sentence. That's permission. Take it.
A prayer for today
Done. That's the word. I'm done circling that old story, God. You already know every line. You've heard every version I've tried to tell. Thank You that I don't have to find the perfect ending or the moral of the story. The book is closed. You closed it. I am held by this new thing You are doing. I don't have to perceive it clearly or understand how it grows. I just am… here. In the space after the last page. Where Your kindness is the only sound. That's enough. I am enough. Not because of the story, but in spite of it. Thank You. Amen.
