Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
'It still hurts.' The quiet voice in your head, the one that replays the scene. The memory that surfaces without warning, bringing with it the old ache, the familiar weight. You've been carrying this story for so long. It's a heavy thing to hold—the past that won't stay past, the chapter you thought was closed but keeps reopening.
Is it any wonder you feel worn? That the exhaustion runs deeper than today's tasks? Carrying a story like that—it makes sense that your shoulders feel heavy, that your spirit feels tired. This isn't a failure of strength. It's the natural cost of bearing something for miles and years. What if your weariness isn't a sign you're doing it wrong, but proof you've been doing the hard work of carrying it at all?
'Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.' Listen to the invitation. It doesn't say 'Come when you've figured out how to put it down.' It doesn't say 'Come once you've stopped feeling the ache.' It says 'Come weary.' Come burdened. Your weariness is the ticket, not a barrier. Your burden is the reason, not a disqualification. This is an understanding that meets you exactly where you are—in the fatigue of carrying that story. The gift isn't a lecture on how to carry it better. The gift is rest. A stopping place. A moment where the weight is met, not with demand, but with a profound 'I see how heavy it's been.'
Your exhaustion is met with understanding. The story you've carried is seen, and you are seen within it. Not as a project to fix, but as a person to hold. Right now, in this quiet, the carrying can pause. You don't have to figure out how to let go forever. Just for this breath, for this moment, the weight can be shared. The weariness makes sense. And you are met right there, in the making-sense of it all.
You are held. Not in spite of the story, but with it. That's the whole story.
A prayer for today
My shoulders remember the weight. You see the old ache, the memory that sits like a stone. I'm tired from carrying it. Thank You that my weariness isn't a surprise to You. Thank You that the invitation is for the burdened—for me, exactly as I am. I don't have to explain why it's still heavy or apologize for being tired. You are meeting me here. You are giving rest—not as a task for me to accomplish, but as a gift for me to receive. The story is being held by You. I am being held by You. That is enough. I am enough here. Amen.
