Proverbs 20:24

“A person’s steps are directed by the LORD. How then can anyone understand their own way?”

"They don't get it." The thought circles again. "If I could just explain one more time, make them see my side, then maybe..." You're mentally rehearsing your defense, polishing your arguments like precious stones. The need to be understood sits like a weight in your chest, a heavy book you feel compelled to hand over, page by painful page.

That pressure makes sense. When your intentions are questioned or your heart is misread, the instinct is to clarify, to correct the record. You want the story told right—your story. It's a human ache to be known accurately, not as a character in someone else's narrative.

Picture this: you don't have to hand over the book. You don't have to defend the plot or justify the chapters. Your story—the raw, unedited, beautifully messy version—is already received. It's been read cover-to-cover by the One who wrote you into being. The scripture puts it plainly: 'A person’s steps are directed by the LORD. How then can anyone understand their own way?' It's a gentle, freeing truth. If even you can't fully trace the path of your own life, how could anyone else be the final judge of it? The directing of your steps, the weaving of your story, belongs to a wisdom far beyond any courtroom or conversation. Your worth isn't waiting on a verdict from the jury of other people's opinions. It was settled before you spoke your first word.

So feel the weight of that heavy book—the need to explain, to make them see—and then feel your fingers loosen. You can let it drop. It was never yours to carry in the first place. The record is safe. The narrative is held. You are fully known, and in that knowing, you are fully loved. No defense is necessary.

You can stop explaining now. You can let the arguments dissolve. You can rest in the quiet truth that you are seen, and that seeing is filled with kindness. Your story is received. That's all that ever mattered.

A prayer for today

Defensive. That's the posture. My mind is a prepared statement, my heart is braced for cross-examination. I'm so tired of carrying this book, God—this heavy record of my reasons. Thank You that I don't have to present my case to You. You're not a judge waiting for my evidence; You're the author who knows every line. My story is safe with You. The misunderstood parts, the messy chapters—they're all received. I am held in Your knowing. That's the only verdict I need. The book drops from my hands. I leave it here. I am known. I am okay. Amen.
