Psalm 88:18

“You have taken from me friend and neighbor—darkness is my closest friend.”

Friday night. The calendar says it's time for connection, but your couch feels like an island. The texts went unanswered, the plans fell through, and the quiet in the room has a different texture—it's not peaceful, it's hollow. That space where laughter or shared silence was supposed to be just... echoes.

Does it make sense that this feels lonely? Of course it does. Is it any wonder that the absence of a familiar voice leaves you feeling set apart? The ache for a friend, for a neighbor, isn't a sign of weakness. It's the proof you were made for more than just your own company.

The writer of an ancient song knew this hollow space intimately. He sang it raw: 'You have taken from me friend and neighbor—darkness is my closest friend.' He didn't sugarcoat it. He named the loss. He called the darkness a companion because sometimes, that's what the loneliness feels like—not just an empty room, but a presence of its own. And here is the gift, buried in the honesty: your feeling of isolation is seen. It's named. It's validated in the sacred text itself. You are not crazy for feeling this way. You are not failing at being content. You are human, experiencing a human wound.

This scripture isn't a solution; it's a mirror. It reflects your reality back to you and says, 'Yes. This hurts.' And in that reflection, something shifts. The darkness as a companion isn't a forever sentence. It's an acknowledgment of the current weather in your soul. But the one who holds the psalmist—and holds you—is not the darkness. He is the one who receives the song, even when the song is grief. He is the listener in the hollow space. Your isolation does not isolate you from Him. Your feeling of being set apart is met by a presence that specializes in drawing near to the set apart.

The hollow space is real. But it is not void. It is being filled, even now, with a knowing that you are utterly known. You are companioned, even in the feeling of being alone.

You are held. That's the whole story.

A prayer for today

My chest feels hollow. The quiet rings in my ears. You are here, in the middle of this empty feeling. Thank You that I don't have to pretend this is fine. Thank You for the psalmist who gave words to this ache, so I wouldn't have to find them myself. You see the space where friendship should be. You are not afraid of the darkness I'm calling a companion tonight. I am not alone in my aloneness. You are the listener. You are the one who draws near. Let Your presence be the thing that fills the hollow, not as a replacement, but as a steady truth beneath the feeling. I am companioned by You. That is enough for tonight. Amen.
