Isaiah 40:31
“but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
There's a word for this feeling. It's called 'running on empty.' You've been pouring from a cup that's been dry for days, maybe weeks. The tank is on fumes, but the road ahead still looks long. You're not just tired; you're weary down to your bones, the kind of tired that makes even hope feel like a heavy lift.
That weariness makes sense. You've been carrying weights you weren't meant to shoulder alone. The pressure to keep going, to not let anyone down, to be the strong one—it's a heavy cloak. You don't have to pretend it's light. You don't have to muster a smile or dig for a reserve of grit you're pretty sure you never had.
'But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.' That's not a suggestion—it's an invitation with your name on it. Notice the verb: *renew*. It doesn't say 'manufacture' or 'summon.' It says renew. Like a battery being recharged by a power source it's plugged into. Like a well being refilled by a deep, underground spring you can't see. Your strength isn't a resource you mine from your own depleted spirit. It arrives. It's delivered. It meets you right here, in the exhaustion, before you've taken a single step toward recovery. Those eagle's wings? They aren't grown through effort. They're given. Lifted by a current you didn't create, carrying you on a strength that isn't your own. You don't have to find the wind; the wind finds you. You don't have to become strong; strength comes to you.
So right now, in this breath, feel the shift. The weight you've been carrying is being met by an arriving strength. You are not being asked to climb out of your weariness. You are being lifted from within it. The current is here, beneath you, ready to bear you up.
Breathe in. Strength is arriving. Breathe out. You are being carried.
A prayer for today
Thank You that I don't have to manufacture my own courage. Thank You that my empty hands are not a problem for You to solve, but an invitation for You to fill. I'm out of my own strength. I admit it. And You are not disappointed. You are here. Your promise is renewing me right now, like a deep breath for my soul. I am being lifted on those eagle's wings You promised. I am not striving; I am being carried by a current of kindness I did not earn. That is enough. I am held. Amen.
