Isaiah 50:4
“The Sovereign LORD has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.”
The screen just went dark. You set the phone down after scrolling through another day of everyone else's highlight reels. The quiet of the room feels heavy, not peaceful. You're in the middle of a season that feels like waiting—waiting for a breakthrough, for energy to return, for a sign that you're moving forward and not just stuck.
What if the ache of this in-between isn't a sign you're doing it wrong? What if the weariness isn't a failure of your faith, but simply the honest weight of being human in a broken world? Is it possible that feeling empty doesn't mean you are empty?
Listen to this, from a prophet who knew about long, hard waits: 'The Sovereign LORD has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.' This isn't a story about a hero who never grew tired. It's a promise about a God who provides the exact nourishment needed for the exact moment you're in. The word that sustains the weary. Not the word that scolds the weary for being tired. Not the word that waits for you to become strong. The word for the weary, delivered to the weary. He doesn't just hand you a week's worth of rations and send you on your lonely way. He wakes you up, morning by morning. Your provision isn't stored in a pantry for you to raid when you remember. It's placed in your hands, day by day, bite by bite. For this morning's doubt. For this afternoon's frustration. For this night's uncertainty. The food for this very moment is already here. You don't have to manufacture it, search for it, or earn it. Your only job is to open your hands and receive what's being given. The nourishment isn't contingent on your performance in the waiting. It's the reason you can wait at all.
So for right now, in this quiet, the meal is served. The sustenance for a weary soul is on the table. Taste it. The waiting isn't empty. It is being filled, bite by bite, breath by breath.
A prayer for today
'He wakens me morning by morning.' You do that. You wake me. Not to a list of demands, but to a gift already prepared. Today, I am weary. You know the word that sustains the weary. So I am bringing You my tired heart, my foggy mind, my hope that feels thin. I don't have to find the strength. You are placing it in me, like daily bread. You are providing the exact nourishment I need for the hours ahead. I am fed. I am sustained. Not by my own grit, but by Your faithful, morning-by-morning kindness. Thank You that the table is set before I even arrive. I am taking my seat. Amen.
