Ecclesiastes 3:7

“a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak,”

You’re staring at the blinking cursor. Or maybe you’re replaying a conversation, mentally editing your words, wishing you’d said something wiser. The pressure to make every sentence count—to always say the right thing—feels like a real weight on your chest. The quiet worry that your silence was a failure, or that what you actually said wasn’t enough.

That pressure makes sense. You care. Of course you want your words to help someone, not just fill the air. But “caring” and “having to say something profound every time” are not the same thing.

Ecclesiastes says it plainly: “a time to be silent and a time to speak.” Both get equal billing. Silence is not the failed version of speaking—it is its own season, just as valid. The wisdom here is not a strategy for you to figure out. It is an observation: your conversations, your relationships, your whole life moves in rhythms. Some moments call for words. Some moments call for nothing at all. Neither is a mistake.

You are not responsible for making every exchange meaningful. That was never the job. The job was just to show up—and sometimes showing up looks like a good sentence, and sometimes it looks like sitting quietly with someone who is hurting. Both count. Your worth is not measured by how well you said the last thing you said.

You don’t have to produce something deep today. You are allowed to just be here.

A prayer for today

Thank You for the truth that not every moment demands a speech. For the gift of silence that isn’t empty, but full of Your presence. I’ve been carrying the script for every conversation, the pressure to make my words matter. I lay down that heavy, self-written script now. I am not the author of every outcome. You are holding the timing—the when to speak and the when to be still. I am held in that rhythm. My value isn’t in my vocabulary. I rest here, wordless and known. That is enough. Amen.
