Romans 12:10

“Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.”

End of the day. End of the performance. The curtain has fallen, and you’re standing in the quiet backstage of your own mind, still wearing the costume of who you were supposed to be today. The script is done. The audience—real or imagined—has gone home. All that’s left is the echo of your own lines and the weight of a role you never auditioned for.

You don’t have to explain this feeling. The drive to earn your place, to justify your existence through output and approval—it makes a certain brutal sense. We’re taught that love is a transaction, that worth is a scorecard. So you perform. You hustle. You polish. And when you stop, there’s just this hollow silence where the applause should be.

But listen to this, in the quiet: 'Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.' That’s not another line in the script. It’s the director calling off the entire production. This love it describes? It’s not something you perform *for*. It’s something you are *held by*. It’s a complete gift, already wrapped around you. Your value isn’t a rating from the crowd. It’s the settled, unchanging fact that you are honored. Seen. Chosen. Before you did a single thing. The striving was always just noise over a melody that was already playing.

The performance ends here. Not with a grand finale, but with a slow, deep exhale. The lights dim. The costume slips from your shoulders. What remains isn’t a role, but a person. You. Present. Breathing. And that—just you, here—is the whole point. It was never about the show. It was always about being known.

So let the stage go dark. Let the set be struck. The gift was never out there, waiting to be won. It’s in here, in the unscripted, unpolished, perfectly enough heart of you. You are the complete gift. The curtain doesn’t need to rise again.

A prayer for today

Honestly? I’m tired of my own act, God. The pretending, the polishing, the constant audition. I don’t have the energy to perform for You tonight. I’m just me—the version without the makeup, without the clever lines. Thank You that Your love isn’t a review of my performance. Thank You that I am honored by You, not for what I do, but because I am Yours. The script is finished. The role is over. I am held in this quiet, backstage truth. I am enough, simply because You say I am. That’s all. Amen.
