Deuteronomy 31:6
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Your hand is on the doorknob. Not to leave, but to check—again—if it’s locked. It’s that subtle tension in your shoulders, the slight lean forward, a readiness for the floor to drop. You’ve learned to live braced. For the other shoe, for the goodbye, for the moment when what you counted on quietly slips away. It’s not fear shouting; it’s a whisper in your muscles, a habit of the heart.
There’s a promise that cuts through that preparation. 'Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified... for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.' Read that last part slowly. Never leave. Never forsake. Those aren’t hopeful suggestions for a good day. They are the ironclad terms of a covenant. The door on abandonment isn’t just locked from your side. It’s been sealed shut from the outside, nailed closed by a promise that predates your first doubt. Your hesitation—that instinct to brace for an exit—meets a reality where no exit exists. The One who is with you isn’t weighing His options. His presence isn’t a trial period. It’s the permanent condition of your life.
So what happens to the energy spent on that lean, on that watchful stance? It becomes available for something else. The strength you were using to hold yourself up against a potential leaving can now be released into simply being held. The courage you were mustering to face a future alone can dissolve into the quiet courage of trusting a presence that has already vowed to stay. You are not in a waiting room to see if you’re chosen. You are in a room where the door is closed, the lights are warm, and you are already home. The story isn’t about whether He stays. That chapter is written, finished, signed. The story is about you learning to believe the furniture is real, that you can finally put your full weight down.
Is it safe to stop bracing? The promise is the answer. Yes.
A prayer for today
'He will never leave you nor forsake you.' You said it. I’m holding onto the sound of those words tonight. All my internal leaning, the subtle preparation for loss—I bring it to this truth. You are not a guest in my life, checking the time. You are the permanent resident. The door is sealed. So I am unclenching. The vigilance is draining away, not because I’m brave enough, but because Your promise is strong enough. Thank You that my security was never my job to maintain. I am anchored. I am stayed. I am home. That’s the whole story. Amen.
