Proverbs 15:15
“All the days of the oppressed are wretched, but the cheerful heart has a continual feast.”
You're searching for color in a world that feels relentlessly gray. At the same time, a part of you is tired of looking. How can you want to see beauty and feel too weary to find it in the same breath? Both are true. The gray makes sense. When your focus is fixed on what's missing—the energy you lack, the connection that feels distant, the purpose that seems fuzzy—of course your vision adjusts. Lack becomes the only thing you can see clearly. It's not a failure of your spirit; it's a simple trick of the light. Your heart has been trained to spot the empty spaces, and it's become very good at its job. Picture this: a different kind of training. The writer of Proverbs paints two portraits side by side. 'All the days of the oppressed are wretched, but the cheerful heart has a continual feast.' This isn't about slapping on a happy face. It's about a fundamental shift in what the heart is looking for. An 'oppressed' heart is weighed down, focused on its burdens. A 'cheerful' heart has learned to look for the feast—the small kindness, the moment of quiet, the breath of air, the glimpse of something good. The feast isn't a massive banquet suddenly appearing. It's the continual noticing of the nourishment that's already there, scattered through your ordinary day like breadcrumbs. The gray world starts to gain color not when the circumstances change, but when your heart's gaze softens and widens. You're not being asked to ignore the hard things. You're being invited to also see the good ones. The invitation is to let your heart practice a new kind of sight. What if, right now, you could spot one thing that isn't gray? One tiny point of light or warmth? That noticing is the first taste of the feast. It's already set for you. Breathe in. There is more here than lack. Breathe out. Your heart is learning to find it.
A prayer for today
My eyes are tired of seeing the gray, God. They've gotten too good at finding the shadows and the empty spaces. I'm bringing that worn-out vision to You. You already know how it feels. I don't have the strength to force my sight to change. But You are the one who paints color back into the world. You are offering the feast. So here I am, with my weary eyes and my heart that wants to learn. Thank You that the shift doesn't depend on my effort. Thank You that the feast is continual, even when I miss it. Right now, I am receiving a new way of seeing. I am held in a kindness that wants to show me more. That's enough. Amen.
