Psalm 142:4
“Look and see, there is no one at my right hand; no one is concerned for me. I have no refuge; no one cares for my life.”
You're not the only one who walks this well-worn path. It's the familiar route of the mind, the one that instinctively scans the landscape for what's missing, what's broken, what's not enough. Your eyes are trained to spot the empty spaces first—the unfinished tasks, the quiet relationships, the dreams that feel distant. This habit of seeing scarcity colors everything, turning a perfectly ordinary day into a subtle reminder of lack.
That pattern makes sense. When you've walked a path so many times, your feet know the way without you having to think. The neural pathways of 'not enough' are deeply grooved. You don't have to blame yourself for ending up here again. It's simply the trail you know best.
Right now, in this breath, something else is true. The psalmist knew this path too, crying out, 'Look and see, there is no one at my right hand; no one is concerned for me. I have no refuge; no one cares for my life.' He named the barren landscape of his loneliness. But here's the gift hidden in his raw honesty: the very act of speaking that ache was an act of turning. He was bringing his habit of lack to the One who was listening all along. His cry of 'no one' was met by a Someone. Your gaze, fixed on absence, is being gently met by a Presence. You are not walking this path alone. The scarcity you see is not the final reality. A deeper abundance—unseen, unearned—is already surrounding you, waiting to be noticed not by your striving, but by your simple receiving. The kindness you crave is already flowing toward you, not because you finally spotted it, but because it has been seeking you.
So go gently into this night, beloved. The old path is familiar, but you are companioned on it. Your eyes are being healed to see a different world. Sleep well, knowing you are seen in your lack and loved within it. That is more than enough.
A prayer for today
Scarcity. That's the default setting tonight, God. My mind automatically scans for what's missing, what's wrong, what's left undone. It's a habit I know too well. Thank You that I don't have to break this cycle on my own strength. Thank You that my cry of 'no one' and 'not enough' is always met by Your 'I am here' and 'I have provided.' Right now, my gaze is being turned. My heart is being opened to the abundance I've been missing. I am held within my lack, and that changes everything. I rest here, companioned. Amen.
