Colossians 3:23

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,”

You've been looking for the grand sign, the flashing arrow that points to your 'real' purpose. Maybe you've been waiting for a feeling of significance to arrive like a package, something you can unwrap and finally hold. The dishes are just dishes. The email is just an email. The task is just a task, and it all feels strangely small against the bigness of the question: what is my life for?

The weight of that question makes sense. It's heavy. It can make the ordinary work of your hands feel like a distraction from the main event. You start to believe that meaning is something you manufacture for later, a project for a day when you have more energy, more clarity, more time.

'Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.' That's not a suggestion—it's an invitation with your name on it. It flips the script entirely. Purpose isn't a destination you reach after the mundane stuff. It's the companion who meets you in the middle of it. Right here, in the soapy water. In the keystrokes of a reply. In the settled task you mark 'done.' You are not working toward meaning. Meaning is working through you. The God who spun galaxies is intimately interested in the work of your hands, not because of its worldly impact, but because it's yours. This is the vibrant secret: your calling is woven into your current coordinates. The sacred isn't waiting for you in a different room; it's humming in this one.

So let that truth land. The purpose you've been seeking isn't elusive. It's settled. It has already made its home in the work before you. The email sent with care, the floor swept clean, the kindness offered—these aren't interruptions to a meaningful life. They are the meaning, meeting you, filling the ordinary with a quiet, complete significance. You are already living your calling. The task is done, and so is the searching.

A prayer for today

Thank You for this sink of dishes. For this screen glowing with words. For the ordinary ground beneath my feet today. I confess I often rush through these things, treating them as hurdles on the way to something more important. I miss the meaning meeting me here. You see this work. You are in this work. You are making the daily stuff sacred, not because of what I produce, but because I am yours. So right now, I am held in this truth: my purpose is settled. It's not out there. It's here, in my tired hands, in my settled tasks. I am working for You, and that makes all the difference. Thank You that nothing is wasted. Every small thing is made significant by Your gaze. Amen.
