John 10:10

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

Friday evening. The week's checklist is a ghost in the room, and your mind is already drafting next week's anxieties. Or maybe it's replaying yesterday's conversation, the one where you wish you'd said something different. You're here, but not really here.

This habit of living anywhere but now steals from you. It takes the color out of this ordinary scene and tells you that real life is waiting in the next chapter, the next achievement, the next resolved worry. The thief Jesus named operates on exactly that schedule.

But listen to what He says instead: "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." Not life later. Not life once you get your timeline sorted. Life now, and fully. That word "full" is doing real work here. Jesus is not describing a future reward. He is describing what He brought with Him when He came. It is already here.

Which means the laundry waiting to be folded, the steam rising from your mug, the familiar weight of the couch beneath you — these ordinary things are not obstacles between you and real life. They are where real life is happening. You do not have to earn it or wait for it. It is given to you in the present tense, in this room, in this moment.

You are not missing it. You are in it.

Go gently into this night.

A prayer for today

Distracted. That is my default setting, God. My mind keeps pulling toward yesterday's regrets or tomorrow's worries, and I keep missing what is right in front of me. I confess I have let the thief steal this ordinary evening, trading it for anxiety about a future that is not here yet. Thank You that the full life You promised is not a reward for my perfect attention. It is a gift You already brought. You are in this room. You are in this breath. I receive that. I am here, and You are here. That is enough. Amen.
