Genesis 2:7
“Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.”
You're reading this, but your mind is already somewhere else. Replaying that awkward thing you said yesterday. Pre-writing tomorrow's difficult email in your head. Your body is here, in this chair, in this room, but you? You're somewhere between regret and dread, missing the life happening right now.
It makes sense. The past feels safer to analyze. The future feels more urgent to control. The present moment has nothing to fix, nothing to rehearse—and that can feel almost uncomfortable.
Picture the very first human, just formed from dust. No life yet. And then—God doesn't hand him a to-do list. God doesn't show him a map of his future failures. God breathes. The first gift isn't a purpose to achieve; it's a life to receive. 'The LORD God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.' Life didn't start when Adam figured something out. It started when he received a breath already moving toward him.
Your wandering mind isn't a spiritual failure. It's just a mind doing what minds do. But right now, the breath moving in and out of your lungs is the same kind of gift Adam received—unearned, sustaining, already here. You don't have to earn your way back to the present. You're already in it. That rhythm was set in motion for you, not by you.
The future can wait a moment longer. The past is done. This breath is already here, and it is enough.
A prayer for today
Honestly? I'm so tired of my own thoughts. My mind is a browser with a hundred tabs open, all of them from yesterday or tomorrow. I keep missing what's right in front of me. I'm bringing You this habit of leaving before I've even arrived. Thank You that I don't have to mentally time-travel to be with You. You are in this breath. You are in this quiet. You are making me a living being, right now, not when I finally pay attention. I am being gathered back into this moment by Your kindness. My feet are on the ground. My lungs are filling. That's my prayer. That's enough. Amen.
