Ecclesiastes 3:12-13
“I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God.”
The air is still. Your phone screen casts a pale light on the ceiling. Somewhere in the quiet, a question echoes: is this all there is? You have been looking ahead, assuming the full version of your life is waiting at some finish line you have not crossed yet.
That ache makes sense. Of course you would wonder. You have spent a whole year — and maybe a whole lifetime — searching.
But here is what an ancient writer discovered, and wrote down so you could find it tonight: "I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil — this is the gift of God."
Notice what he names. Not a vision. Not an achievement. A meal. A day's work. The plain goodness of being alive. He calls all of it a gift — not a reward you earn by getting your life sorted out, but something God hands to you in the middle of ordinary days.
You are in an ordinary day right now. And you are already in it — the life you have been looking for. God gave it to you before you understood that. The searching is over. The gift was already open.
You are home.
A prayer for today
Naming it: the search. The constant scanning of the horizon for a life that feels real. Naming the truer thing: You are here. In this room. In this breath. God, thank You that the full life isn't a finish line I have to sprint toward. You have planted it in me—a quiet, steady aliveness that beats beneath all my lists and worries. I am not waiting to be made alive. I am alive, right now, held in this moment by You. The satisfaction in my work, the goodness of a simple meal—these aren't crumbs. They're the feast, spread out before me in the present tense. I receive this gift of presence. I am here, and You are here. That is the whole story. Amen.
