Psalm 38:9

“All my longings lie open before you, Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you.”

We've all stood in that long hallway. You know the one—where the light at the end seems like a rumor, not a promise. Where every step forward feels like it echoes into more emptiness, and the only thing you can think is, 'How much longer?' Your heart isn't just tired; it's aching for a finish line, a date on the calendar when this chapter finally closes. That deep, sighing want for resolution isn't a sign you're failing at endurance. It's the most human thing in the world.

Does it make sense to want this season to be over? Of course it does. Is it understandable to feel impatient with the endless middle, to dream of a day when the weight finally lifts? How could it not be? This longing isn't a spiritual flaw. It's a normal breath taken in a very long corridor. You're not wrong for wanting out. You're alive.

Listen to this, from a place of raw honesty: 'All my longings lie open before you, Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you.' Every whispered hope for relief, every silent plea for an ending you can't yet see—none of it is lost in the echo. It's all laid bare. Known. Understood. Not as a complaint to be corrected, but as a heart-cry to be received. Your sighing has an audience. The One who holds time itself isn't annoyed by your impatience; He's present within it. He meets you right here, in the ache for the 'not yet.' This scripture isn't a command to stop wanting. It's an affirmation that your wanting is seen. The hallway feels long because it is long. But you are not walking it alone. Your longing doesn't push love away; it invites Presence in. The very breath of your sigh is noticed, collected, held.

So breathe that normal breath. Let it out. The corridor is still there, but you are seen within it. Tomorrow will come with its own light, its own step. For now, in this exact moment of wanting, you are fully known. That is enough. You can stop here, understood.

A prayer for today

The words won't come neatly tonight, God. But the sigh does. The deep, wordless exhale that holds all my 'how much longer?' and 'I just want this to be over.' You already know it. You hear the longing my heart can't even fully shape into sentences. Every hope for an end date, every tired wish for relief—it's all open before You. Not hidden. Not a surprise. Thank You that my impatience doesn't disqualify me from Your kindness. Thank You that in the middle of this long hallway, my normal breath of wanting is met by Your steady presence. I am held, even here. I am understood, even now. That truth settles over me like a quiet answer. Tomorrow can bring what it will. For this moment, being seen is sufficient. Amen.

Facing the 'How Long?' · You're tired of asking 'how long' this hard season will last. A steady hope meets you right here, not with an answer, but with a presence in the middle of the waiting.
