Do I have to earn my place in my own life?

You're lying in bed, staring at the dark ceiling. Your jaw is still a little tight. Your shoulders haven't fully found the mattress. Your body is here, but part of you feels like it's still waiting for permission to land—like you haven't quite done enough today to deserve this quiet.

That feeling makes sense. After a lifetime of performing and managing and trying to measure up, it's natural to wonder if belonging is something you have to earn.

But here is what Paul writes to the church at Ephesus—people who knew exactly what it felt like to be outsiders: "Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God's people and also members of his household."

Notice what he does not say. He does not say you are working toward citizenship. He does not say you are on a waiting list. He says you are no longer foreigners. Present tense. Already done. You are a member of the household—not because you earned it, but because God said so.

That means the question your tired mind keeps asking tonight—have I done enough to belong here?—has already been answered. You did not buy your way in. You were placed here. The belonging is not a reward for good behavior. It is a fact about who you are.

So let your jaw unclench. Let your shoulders settle. You are not here on a trial basis. You are home.
