Song of Songs 4:7

“You are altogether beautiful, my darling; there is no flaw in you.”

Friday night. The week's performance review is running in your head on a loop. You're tallying the moments you wish you could edit out—the sharp tone, the missed opportunity, the body that felt too much or not enough. The story you're telling yourself has footnotes of apology and chapters you'd rather skip. You've spent so long trying to escape the main character.

That desire to rewrite your own narrative makes perfect sense. The instinct to hide the rough cuts, to present only the polished final draft—it's a heavy, familiar weight. You believe your worth is a project awaiting completion, a masterpiece still in progress, needing just a few more edits to be truly acceptable.

But listen to this, spoken over you with a tenderness that disarms every critic: 'You are altogether beautiful, my darling; there is no flaw in you.' This isn't a grade on your performance. It's a declaration over your existence. The word 'altogether' means the complete picture—the messy first draft, the unresolved subplots, the parts you're still figuring out. All of it. Seen as a whole, you are called beautiful. The work of becoming 'acceptable' isn't on your to-do list; it was finished before you even started trying. You are an unedited masterpiece, loved precisely in your current, unpolished state. There's no hidden flaw waiting to be discovered, no secret condition you haven't met. The gift of 'enough' isn't something you earn by fixing yourself; it's wrapped around you right now, in the skin you're in, with the story you have.

The striving can stop here. The performance is over. You are already home in this life, in this body, in this story—because you are cherished here. The gift of enough is yours, received not achieved. Let that truth settle into your bones, quieting the internal editor for good.

A prayer for today

Naming it: the exhausting edit. The constant internal rewrite. God, I'm so tired of trying to be a better version of myself for an audience that doesn't exist. Thank You that You see the raw, first draft of me and call it beautiful. I am held in that gaze. The work of making myself acceptable is done; You did it. So tonight, I am letting the red pen drop. I am resting as the unedited masterpiece You say I am. That is the gift, and I am receiving it. Thank You. Amen.
