Ezekiel 36:26
“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.”
You know that look in the mirror sometimes? The one where the person staring back feels more like a familiar stranger than yourself. It's the disconnect between who you think you should be and who you actually feel like in the quiet moments. That gap can feel wide, lonely, like you're living in a house where you don't quite know the layout anymore.
That feeling is real. The weight of not recognizing your own heart, of feeling like an imposter in your own skin—it's a heavy thing to carry. You're not making it up. The ache of being a stranger to yourself is a valid ache. It makes sense that you'd want to flee from it, to outrun the discomfort of not knowing the person you're supposed to be closest to.
Picture this: you don't have to outrun it. You don't have to perform a reunion with yourself or stage a grand reconciliation. The promise is already in motion, spoken over you long before you felt the first pang of disconnect. 'I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.' That stone heart? That's the stranger feeling—cold, hard, unyielding, keeping you at arm's length from your own life. The heart of flesh is the opposite. It's warm. It beats. It feels. It's alive and known, even to you. This isn't a self-improvement project you need to manage. It's a divine exchange you simply receive. The hard, unfamiliar shell is being gently, persistently replaced with something soft, something that belongs to you, something that remembers how to be loved and how to love in return. The stranger is being welcomed home from the inside out.
So the softening you might sense? That's not your imagination. It's the stone cracking, the ice thawing, the familiar warmth of a heart that knows its name returning. Tomorrow will come, and with it, more moments of feeling known—by Him, and slowly, by yourself. For tonight, rest in the settled truth: you are not a stranger here. You are recognized. You are home.
A prayer for today
Here I am. With this heart that sometimes feels like a stone in my chest—cold, heavy, unfamiliar. I'm tired of feeling like a guest in my own life. Thank You for the promise that changes everything. Thank You that You are the one doing the work I could never do. You are removing what's hard and giving what's soft. You are replacing the stranger with the beloved. I receive it. I am given a heart of flesh. I am known. Let that truth sink in deeper than any feeling of disconnect. I rest here, in the quiet work of Your kindness. The thaw has begun. Amen.
