Psalm 139:1-2

“You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.”

You feel most alone when you're with yourself. That's the paradox. The person in the mirror should be familiar, a friend, but instead they feel like a stranger you're politely tolerating. This skin, this life—it can feel like a borrowed coat that never quite fits right, no matter how you adjust it.

Is it any wonder? After a lifetime of hiding parts of yourself—tucking away the messy bits, softening the edges to fit in, performing the version you think is acceptable—of course your own home feels strange. You've been a guest in your own life. Who wouldn't feel foreign after all that?

But listen to this, from someone who sees through every layer of the costume: 'You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.' This isn't a surveillance report. It's the most intimate knowledge possible. He perceives your thoughts from afar—meaning He knows the real ones, the ones that spin in the quiet, the ones you'd never say out loud. The search is complete. The knowing is total.

And here’s what that means for the borrowed coat feeling: you are fully known, and you are fully loved. Not in spite of the hidden parts, but including them. The you that you've been hiding from the world—and maybe from yourself—is the you He has always seen. The real shape of your soul isn't a mystery to Him. He isn't waiting for you to finally become familiar to yourself before He moves in. He's already home. His knowing is the key that unlocks the door you thought was sealed.

So the foreignness? It makes sense. It's the natural result of hiding. But it's not the final truth. The final truth is that you are perceived, known, and claimed. Not as a temporary tenant, but as a permanent resident of a love that fits perfectly.

Notice the space that opens in your chest when you hear that. That's the feeling of a door you thought was locked swinging open from the inside. No knocking required. You're already home.

A prayer for today

Thank You that I don't have to introduce myself. Thank You that no part of my story is a surprise or a disappointment to You. You searched and You know. Every hidden corner, every thought I thought was too much. This borrowed coat feeling—this sense of being a stranger to myself—You see that, too. And You're not asking me to tailor it better. You're asking me to take it off, because the real shape of me is already known and loved by You. I am seen. I am known. I am home, because You are here. That is more than enough. Amen.
