John 8:12

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'”

Before you read another word, notice the light. The glow from this screen. The faint outline it casts in your room. Now, notice the dark around it. The shadows in the corner. The space beyond what you can clearly see. That’s where you live sometimes, isn’t it? In the in-between of knowing and not knowing, of clarity and confusion. You’ve been squinting, trying to make out the path, searching for a switch on a wall you can’t even find.

The searching makes sense. When you can’t see the next step, your instinct is to grope for a handhold, to strain your eyes for any sliver of direction. You’ve been believing that finding your way is your job. That illumination is a prize for the persistent seeker. But what if you’ve had it backwards?

Right now, in this breath, something is happening that requires nothing from your tired eyes. The promise isn’t 'you must find the light.' It’s 'I am the light.' The light isn’t a distant destination on a map you have to decipher. The light is a person. And this person makes a declaration that changes everything: 'Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'

You will *have* it. Not chase it. Not earn it. Have it. As a gift. As a companion. This is the gentle light handed to you in the dark. It doesn’t blast away every shadow with the harsh glare of a spotlight, demanding you see miles ahead. It arrives like the soft, steady glow of a lamp on a bedside table—just enough to see your own hands, your next breath, the fact that you are not alone. It’s the light that walks with you, not ahead of you. It meets you in the disorientation and says, 'The way forward is me. And I am already here.'

So feel that? The subtle shift. The slight lessening of the need to figure it all out. That’s the gentle light, arriving. Not because you found it, but because it was always coming for you. You are seen in your dark place. And you are not left there.

A prayer for today

Naming it: the dark. The not-knowing. The feeling of being lost in my own life. You see it all, God. I’m tired of searching for switches that aren’t there. I’m done straining to see what isn’t meant to be seen yet. Thank You that I don’t have to find You. Thank You that You are the light that finds me. Right here. In this confusion. Your promise is holding me now: I have the light of life. It’s not a feeling I muster. It’s a truth You give. So I stop squinting. I am still. I am lit from within by a kindness I did not earn. That is enough. I am enough, here in Your gentle glow. Amen.
