Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Can we be honest? You’ve been holding your breath. Through the planning, the shopping, the mental list-making of who needs what and what meal goes where, there’s been a quiet hum of ‘not enough.’ The pressure for the perfect, peaceful holiday feels like a mountain you’re supposed to climb, and you’re already out of breath at the base. The weight of making magic happen is a real, tangible thing on your shoulders right now.

The weight makes sense. Of course you’d feel it. The cultural soundtrack of the season is all about doing, creating, achieving a specific kind of cheer. Wanting it to be good for everyone is a kind of love, and love is heavy sometimes. But here is the quiet, revolutionary truth whispered beneath all the noise: that mountain was never yours to climb. The work of creating perfect peace, of crafting a flawless moment of joy—that project was completed for you long before your calendar filled up. The striving of the season is a finished work.

‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.’ Do you hear the timeline in that? The weariness is present. The burden is now. But the rest? It’s a future gift that becomes immediately present the moment you come. You don’t come to get instructions for building your own rest. You come to receive a rest that is already built, already wrapped, already bearing your name. The chair is already pulled out for you. The meal is already prepared. The gift of deep, soul-level peace is already in your hands; you just have to stop striving long enough to feel its weight.

So picture it: a chair, prepared just for you. Not a task chair. A resting chair. And you are invited to simply sink into it. To let the structure hold you. All the doing is done. All the earning is irrelevant. The peace you’ve been chasing is not a destination; it’s a person, and He is here, holding the gift out to you. Your only job is to stop, and receive.

Let that settle. No response needed.

A prayer for today

You said ‘Come.’ So here I am, coming weary. Coming burdened by the ghost of a checklist that haunts even my quiet moments. I’m bringing You the pressure to perform a perfect season, the fear of disappointing people I love, the exhaustion that comes from trying to manufacture joy. Thank You that the chair is already here. Thank You that the rest You give isn’t a DIY project with my name on it. It’s a finished work. You are holding it out to me—this gift of peace, of stopping, of being held instead of holding it all together. I am sinking into what You’ve already done. The striving is over. I am received, exactly as I am. That is enough. Amen.
