Luke 2:12
“This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
There's a word for this feeling. It's called searching. You're looking for the sign, the big moment, the feeling of wonder that proves you're on the right path. You scroll, you plan, you hope for the lightning bolt of clarity or the surge of peace that makes everything make sense. The miracle feels like something you have to chase, something waiting on the other side of getting your life together.
Here is what's true, straight from the Christmas story that changed everything: 'This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.' The sign wasn't a palace or a parade. It was a baby. The miracle was wrapped in ordinary cloths, placed in an ordinary feeding trough. The wonder of heaven arrived in the most unremarkable place imaginable. God didn't hide the good news behind a spiritual achievement or a perfectly quiet heart. He placed it right in the middle of the messy, smelly, ordinary reality of a stable.
This changes everything for your searching heart. The wonder you're looking for isn't a destination. It's not a feeling you have to conjure up or a spiritual high you must attain. It's already arrived. It's wrapped in your ordinary, right-now life. In the quiet of your room after a long day. In the taste of your morning coffee. In the weight of your head on the pillow. The divine is not withholding itself until you become more. It is intimately present in the manger of your current reality—the unfinished tasks, the simple joys, the tired exhale. You don't have to go find it. It has already found you, nestled into the plain, unglamorous moments you might overlook.
The miracle is wrapped. Your ordinary is the manger. Right here, right now, wonder is breathing in the same air you are.
A prayer for today
To You, I bring my searching. To You, I bring my ordinary. Thank You that the sign was a baby and the throne was a manger. Thank You that heaven meets earth in the plain, unremarkable places. My life feels so much like that stable sometimes—messy, simple, unfinished. And You are here. You are in this quiet room, in this tired breath, in this very moment. I don't have to clean it up or make it shine for You to arrive. You already have. So I stop looking for the lightning bolt. I am held by the wonder that chose the straw. My ordinary is Your dwelling place. That is more than enough. Amen.
