Isaiah 9:6
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
The calendar says it's the season of joy, but your body says it's the season of exhaustion. Somewhere between the last wrapped gift and the first quiet moment you've stolen for yourself, here you are. The to-do lists are (mostly) done, the gatherings are (finally) over, and now there's just this hollowed-out feeling where energy used to be. You made it through—but it cost you something.
The weariness makes sense. You've been carrying the weight of expectations—your own and everyone else's. You've been the planner, the host, the gift-buyer, the memory-maker. Believing that creating magic for others required draining your own reserves. Thinking that joy was a product you had to manufacture and distribute. No wonder you feel like a string of lights after the party: unplugged, dark, and a little tangled.
Listen to the names spoken over the quiet of this night, spoken over you: 'Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.' This isn't a distant title for a historical figure. This is a present-tense reality for your present-tense exhaustion. The government—the burden of rule, the weight of making everything work—is on *his* shoulders. Not yours. Never was. The weight you've been lugging through December? He's already lifting it. The quiet space your soul has been craving? He's already holding it open for you, a cleared-off chair in the middle of the noise.
You don't have to manufacture peace. You don't have to strive for wonder. The Prince of Peace is peace itself, and he arrives as a gift. The Wonderful Counselor is wisdom itself, and he offers it freely. Your only job is to stop carrying what was never yours to hold. To sink into the quiet space that exists not because you created it, but because he is it. Let the clenched effort in your chest release. The work of the season—the real work—was finished long before it started.
Are you allowed to rest now? The Prince of Peace has already answered. Yes.
A prayer for today
Thank You for this stillness. For the empty space after the fullness, for the quiet after the carols. I'm bringing You the hollowed-out feeling—the spent energy, the emotional clutter, the fatigue that feels like a physical weight. You are the Prince of Peace, so Your peace is settling into the hollow places now. You are the Everlasting Father, so I am being gathered up, not scolded for being tired. I don't have to rebuild my own reserves. You are filling them. I don't have to name or fix this weariness. You are holding it, and holding me. I am rested in You. That is the gift. Thank You. Amen.
