Isaiah 43:19
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
Maybe you’ve been telling yourself the same old story. The one about the mistake that defines you, the regret that colors your days, the chapter you wish you could rewrite but feel permanently stuck inside. You carry it like a book you’re forced to reread, the spine cracked open to the same painful page.
Here is what’s true, and it doesn’t wait for you to feel ready for it: the story is being rewritten as you sit here. Not by you, straining to edit the past, but by a love that specializes in fresh starts. 'See, I am doing a new thing!' The promise isn’t a distant theory. It’s a present-tense reality, springing up right now in the places of your life that feel most like a wasteland.
A clean slate isn’t something you earn by good behavior or achieve by finally figuring it all out. It is handed to you. Complete. Waiting. Your part isn’t to scrub the old marks away; it’s to stop scrubbing and receive the new page that’s already here. God is making a way in your personal wilderness, carving a path through the thicket of your shame. He is causing streams to flow in your emotional desert—not a trickle you have to dig for, but a current of hope that arrives without your effort.
This is the celebration happening on your behalf. The old record? Wiped. The heavy book of your past? Gently closed and put away. You are being invited to step into a new morning where your history doesn’t get the final vote. The fresh start has your name on it. It’s not a reward for a job well done; it’s the gift that makes all new doing possible. So lift your eyes from the old text. Something new is springing up. Do you not perceive it? The turning of the page is a soundless, graceful act of love. And it is yours.
Is the past finally past? Yes. The love that makes all things new says it is.
A prayer for today
Honestly? I keep reading the old chapters. I memorize my failures. The story of what went wrong feels more real than any promise of something new. But You are speaking a different word over me tonight. You say ‘See’—so I am trying to look. You say ‘new’—so I am letting that word land. You are doing the new thing. You are making the way. You are causing the streams to flow in my wasteland. I am not scrubbing the slate clean. I am receiving it from Your hands. The past is held by You. The future is written by You. In this breath, I am on a new page. Thank You. This is the gift that changes everything. Amen.
