Philippians 3:13
“Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead,”
You know the chapter. The one you keep flipping back to — that old hurt, that repeated mistake, that season that left its mark. You've wondered more than once whether it's really behind you or just pushed down somewhere, waiting to surface again.
That question makes sense. Something buried can come back up. Something truly finished cannot.
Here is what Paul wrote from his own tangled history: "Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead." He wasn't issuing an order for you to white-knuckle your way through. He was describing what God had already set in motion for him — and for you. The forgetting isn't something you have to force. It is being done. The old chapter isn't buried under the new one, waiting to resurface. It is closed. The weight you keep reaching back for has been taken out of your hands.
You are not standing on buried ground. You are standing on new ground. The past is not just behind you — it has been dealt with. That is the difference between buried and finished.
Finished is a gift. And it has your name on it.
A prayer for today
Into Your hands, I place the old chapter. All of it — the lines I've memorized, the scenes that still ache, the story I thought defined me. Thank You that I don't have to force myself to forget. You are the one doing that work. The narrative of my life is in Your hands, and You are writing something new — not because I earned it, but because You are kind. I am released from the old story. I am held in the new one. That is enough for tonight. Amen.
