Lamentations 3:20

“I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me.”

You know this feeling. You pick up the same chapter again—the one about the disappointment, the pattern you couldn't break, the year that didn't go the way you hoped. You already know how it ends. Your soul is heavy just from remembering.

Is it okay to feel that tired of your own story? Yes. It is.

The writer of Lamentations said it plainly: "I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me." He didn't dress it up. He didn't push through to the bright side before naming the weight. He let his soul sink under the memory—and wrote it down for anyone who would ever feel the same. That verse is not a failure. It's an honest man telling the truth about what remembering costs.

You are not failing by being weary of the old pages. That weariness is not a sign that something is wrong with your faith. It is a sign that you are honest. God is not waiting for you to feel better before He shows up. He is already here, sitting with you in the weight of what you well remember, and He is not done with your story yet.

A prayer for today

Thank You for this honesty. For the permission to say my soul is downcast and to not pretend it isn't. Thank You that my weariness with the old story doesn't disqualify me from a new one. You are the Author who specializes in fresh starts. You are holding all my remembered chapters, and You are not finished writing. I am being written into a better story—one of rescue, not regret. The narrative of my past is being held by You, and the next page is already turning. Here, in this quiet, I rest. The work of remembering is Yours. The work of renewing is Yours. I am simply here, on the brink of the new thing You are always doing. Amen.
