Romans 7:15

“I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.”

Somewhere between the last mistake and the next attempt, here you are. The record is stuck on the same scratch, playing the same frustrating tune. You promised yourself it would be different this time. You mapped out a new path in your mind. But your feet, somehow, found the old grooves again. The same reaction. The same ending. The loop feels sealed shut.

This feeling of being trapped in your own patterns? It makes sense. It’s the ache of knowing what you want but watching your hands do the opposite. It’s the gap between your best intentions and your worn-out habits. You’re not broken for noticing the cycle. You’re awake to it.

'I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.' That’s not a suggestion—it’s an invitation with your name on it. An invitation to stop pretending you have it figured out. To stop the exhausting performance of having all the answers. The apostle Paul felt this exact stuckness, this civil war inside. He named it, wrote it down, and in doing so, he was held by a kindness that doesn't demand a perfect track record to show up.

The loop you feel trapped in? It’s not your permanent address. It’s a moment you’re passing through, and you are not passing through alone. The very act of seeing the pattern, of hating the thing you keep doing, is proof that a new way is already stirring within you. You are not defined by the repetition. You are loved right in the middle of it. The kindness that meets you isn't waiting on the other side of a solved problem; it’s sitting with you in the familiar dust of the same old path, offering a hand up not because you climbed out, but simply because you’re there.

So your grip on the old story can loosen. The script you've been rehearsing can be set down. You are allowed to step out of the cycle, not by your own weary force, but because you are being gently led. The door was never locked. You can stop trying to shoulder your way out. Really. It’s allowed.

A prayer for today

Naming it: the loop. The same verse on repeat in my soul. Naming the truer thing: You are the God who changes the song. I’m tired of my own soundtrack, God. The melody of good intentions that always falters. The chorus of 'I’ll do better' that never quite lands. I bring this worn-out record to You—the scratches, the skips, the frustration. You are not disappointed by the repetition. You are here, in the stuckness, with a kindness that doesn't keep score. Your promise holds me, even when my actions don’t match my heart. I am loved in the loop and loved out of it. Thank You that my worth was never tied to breaking the cycle perfectly. I am held. The needle is lifting. A new song is starting. I rest here. Amen.
