Psalm 55:5
“Fear and trembling have beset me; horror has overwhelmed me.”
There's a word for this feeling. It's called being weathered. Like a tree after a long storm, you feel the ache in your branches from holding on. The strong winds have been real—the unexpected news, the relationship that shifted, the ground that didn't feel solid under your feet. The overwhelming horror the psalmist names? You know its shape. It's the middle-of-the-night dread, the pit in your stomach that won't dissolve, the sense that everything is just... too much.
Your weariness makes perfect sense here. Of course you feel shaken. When the foundations tremble, the body trembles too. The weight you're carrying isn't a sign you're doing it wrong; it's the honest, human response to a season of gales. You don't have to apologize for your fatigue or wish it away. It's the proof you've been standing in the storm, and standing takes something.
So hear this, right in the middle of the tremble: 'Fear and trembling have beset me; horror has overwhelmed me.' The writer of this psalm isn't reporting from a safe distance. He's in it. He's naming the chaos without sugarcoating it. And that's the gift—your faith isn't a forcefield against the storm. It's the permission to be utterly honest about the wind and the horror while knowing you're not naming them alone. You're echoing a cry that's ancient and heard. The triumph isn't in pretending you're unshakable; it's in the settled truth that you can be both shaken and held at the very same time. The storm doesn't get the final word on your safety. Your foundation isn't your own strength or a perfect circumstance. It's the love that planted you deep, a love that knows the force of the wind and doesn't let go.
So let the tremor be what it is. You don't have to steady yourself. Something steadier than the storm is holding you. Breathe in. You're anchored. Breathe out. The wind doesn't win.
A prayer for today
Shaken. That's the state I'm in, God. You see the tremor in my hands, the unsteadiness in my soul. I'm bringing You the horror that overwhelmed me, the fear that found me. I don't have to hide how weathered I feel. Thank You that my honesty isn't too much for You. Thank You that the psalmist's words make a space for mine. I am held right in the middle of the shaking. Your grip is the one thing not moved by this wind. So here, in this breath, I stop trying to be my own anchor. I am steadied. I am safe. That's the settled truth. Amen.
A Pillar in the Storm · The winds howl, but you are not the shaking house. You are the pillar within it, grounded in an unshakable identity that lets you stand firm.
