Psalm 46:1-2

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.”

Can we be honest? You’ve been holding your breath. Not literally, but in that place deep in your chest where you brace for the next tremor, the next piece of news that might tilt your world again. The ground hasn’t felt solid. Plans keep changing, and the future looks less like a path and more like shifting sand. You’ve been pretending you’re navigating it just fine, but inside, your soul feels the constant, quiet quake.

The pretending makes sense. The bracing is understandable. When everything feels like it could give way at any moment, of course you’d tense up. Of course you’d try to plant your feet and steady yourself against the invisible current. You’re not overreacting. You’re responding to real uncertainty with a very human need for something, anything, to hold onto.

'God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.' That’s not a suggestion—it’s an invitation with your name on it. Refuge isn’t a distant concept you have to find; it’s a reality moving toward you. Strength isn’t a reservoir you need to tap into; it’s being given to you, like solid ground rising up to meet your feet. The promise isn’t that the earth won’t give way. It’s that when it does—when the mountains of your security do crumble—there is a presence, an ever-present help, that becomes your unshakable foundation. The tremor in your soul quiets not because you’ve solved the instability, but because you are being held within a stability that predates mountains and outlasts seas.

So feel it now: the settling. The exhale you’ve been withholding. The internal plates, once grinding, are finding their rest. You are not standing on sand. You are standing in a refuge. The work of holding it all together was never yours to begin with. It is finished. The shifting settles because He is steady. Sleep well, beloved. You are anchored.

A prayer for today

Thank You for this breath. This one, right now, that feels like the first full one all day. Thank You that I don’t have to manufacture steadiness or pretend the ground is firm when it feels like it’s moving. You are my refuge. You are the strength being poured into my weary places. I am held. The tremor is quieting because You are the quiet. The chaos is being ordered because You are order. I rest here, in this certainty that outlasts every earthquake. That’s enough. Amen.

A Pillar in the Storm · The winds howl, but you are not the shaking house. You are the pillar within it, grounded in an unshakable identity that lets you stand firm.
