Matthew 6:31-32
“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.”
You just closed the planner. The page full of tomorrow's 'shoulds' is still glowing in your mind. What you need to do, who you need to be, the person you're supposed to become by next month or next year. The list is long, and it feels heavy, like a weight you agreed to carry without remembering when you signed up.
Maybe you've been believing that a better plan is the answer—that if you could just muster the grand resolution, the perfect system, then you could finally breathe. That if you worried enough about the 'what shall we eat or drink or wear' of your life—the practicalities, the outcomes, the future—then you'd be safe. That voice says more is expected of you. That holding it all together is required.
Listen to this, straight from the source: 'So do not worry, saying, “What shall we eat?” or “What shall we drink?” or “What shall we wear?” For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.' Did you catch that? Your heavenly Father *knows*. He knows what you need before you even form the question. He sees the list. He sees the worry behind it. And He is not impressed by your ability to plan. He is moved by your inability to stop.
The pagans run. They chase. They strive after security and identity and tomorrow's bread. But you? You are known. You are a child, not a project manager for your own life. The list of resolutions—the grand plan you think you need to muster—it can fall away like leaves from a tree in autumn. It was never meant to be your burden to carry. The weight of providing for yourself, of securing your own future, of being your own source? It was never yours to hold. Your job isn't to run. Your job is to be loved by the One who runs the universe.
So picture the list falling. Not because you ripped it up in a dramatic moment of effort, but because you simply opened your hands and it drifted away on its own. The burden is released. Not by your strength, but by the simple, staggering truth: you are known. You are provided for. You are held, even now, especially now.
Let that settle. No response needed.
A prayer for today
Into Your hands, I place this list. All the 'shoulds' and 'what ifs' scribbled on my soul. The grand plan I can't seem to muster. You already know what I need. You knew before the worry formed in my throat. So I am letting the page fall from my grip. I am not the one holding my world together. You are providing. You are holding. I am provided for. I am held. That is the only plan that matters tonight. Thank You. Amen.
