Psalm 103:13-14
“As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.”
The screen glows. The room is dark. Your eyes are tired but your mind won't stop. Somewhere between the last year and the new one, you're hovering—not quite ready to land, not sure you trust the ground. You want the next step to be soft. You want the next chapter to begin with a whisper, not a bang. After everything, it makes perfect sense.
The weariness you carry isn't a sign you're doing it wrong. It's the honest record of a soul that has been through things. Wanting a gentle start isn't weakness; it's wisdom. It's the deep, bodily knowing that you can't absorb another impact right now. You need a landing strip lined with feathers, not concrete.
Listen to this, from a place of deep knowing: 'As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.'
He knows how you are formed. He remembers the raw material. You are not steel or granite, built to withstand endless force. You are human—beautiful, breakable, dust-and-breath human. And the One who shaped you from that very dust looks at your desire for a soft landing and doesn't see a lack of faith. He sees a child who knows their own limits. He sees you, and His response isn't disappointment. It's compassion. A father's compassion. The kind that sees the skinned knee and doesn't ask why you were running; He just bends down to clean the wound. His knowing isn't a ledger of your failures; it's the reason for His kindness. Because He remembers what you're made of, He meets you exactly there—in your fragile, dusty, wonderful humanity—and His posture is never to demand more resilience. It's to offer a landing so soft it feels like being caught.
This moment. This breath. This is where the compassion finds you. Not in some future version of yourself that has it all figured out, but right here, in the wanting, in the weariness. You are known. You are met. Not with a judgment, but with a kindness so specific it feels like home.
A prayer for today
Thank You for remembering what I'm made of. For knowing dust, and loving it anyway. I'm so tired of hard landings. Of bracing for impact. Tonight, I bring You this fragile hope for something softer. You see the wish for a gentle year, and You don't call it fear. You call it wisdom. You meet it with the compassion of a parent who knows a child's limits. So I stop bracing. I am being caught. Your kindness is the only ground I need tonight. I am held, exactly as I am. Amen.
