Jeremiah 31:3

“I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.”

Can we be honest? You've been looking at other paths. The ones that seem straighter, sunnier, less marked by the particular twists and turns of your own. You've wondered if you took a wrong turn somewhere, if a different version of you would be living a better story. The comparison is quiet but constant—a background hum of 'what if' and 'if only.'

That longing makes sense. The ache for a simpler narrative is human. You're not failing for feeling it. You're just noticing the unique contours of the ground you're walking, and sometimes it feels rocky compared to the smooth roads you imagine for others.

'I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.' That's not a suggestion—it's an invitation with your name on it. The love that meets you here, in this exact chapter with all its plot twists, is not a general affection for well-behaved pilgrims on perfect journeys. It's a specific, fierce fondness for *this* story. Yours. The love knew every detour before you took it. The kindness was drawing you, not toward a different destination, but deeper into the truth of who you are. It wasn't pulling you onto someone else's path; it was gently, unfailingly leading you along your own, loving you at every confusing fork in the road.

This love isn't waiting for you at the end of the path, when you finally have it all figured out. It's walking it with you, proud of the person you are becoming in the midst of the twists. Your worth isn't in having a flawless biography. It's in being the one who is known, and loved, for the whole messy, beautiful, unique tale.

So notice what's happening in your chest right now. That slight softening, the quiet exhale. That's the weight of comparison being lifted, not by your effort, but by a love that chose this story—your story—and has never regretted its choice. You are loved for this path alone.

A prayer for today

Thank You for this breath, for this moment where the striving can stop. Thank You that Your love isn't a reward for a journey well-navigated, but the very ground beneath my feet. I bring You the quiet jealousy, the wonderings about other roads. You already hold them. You are drawing me with a kindness that doesn't compare. You are loving this story—my story—with an affection that feels like home. I am held, not in spite of the twists, but within them. I am known completely, and that knowing is pure gift. Here, on my own path, I rest. That is enough. Amen.
