Psalm 34:18
“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
There's a word for this feeling. You move through rooms, through conversations, through your own days, and it feels like you're just passing through. The laughter around a table, the chatter in a group text—you can be right in the middle of it and still feel utterly separate, like you're watching a movie of a life that isn't quite yours.
Of course you feel this way. When you give pieces of yourself—your attention, your energy, your care—and it seems like no one truly notices the person doing the giving, loneliness isn't a failure. It's a reasonable response. You're not too sensitive for wanting to be known.
Here is what the Bible says about that feeling: "The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." Not close to people who have their act together. Close to the brokenhearted. That's the ghost-feeling person. That's you right now. He doesn't pull back when you feel invisible. He moves toward you. Your loneliness is not a sign that God has left. It is exactly the place where He shows up.
A prayer for today
Naming it: this ghost feeling. This sense of moving through the world unseen. And naming the truer thing: You are here, seeing. God, I feel like a background character. I show up, I do the things, and it seems like no one notices the person behind the actions. The loneliness is real. You already know its shape and size. Thank You that I don't have to perform or shout to be noticed by You. You are close. To me. Right here, in this quiet room, with this quiet ache. My spirit feels crushed, and You are not asking me to fix it first. You are saving me in it. You are gathering up the scattered pieces. I am seen. I am known. I am held in this exact moment. That is the truth that settles everything else. Amen.
