Psalm 10:17
“You, LORD, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry.”
Somewhere between the last task and the first thought of tomorrow, here you are. The day's performance is over, the audience has left, but the stage lights in your mind are still on. And in the quiet, you feel it—not the fatigue in your muscles, but the deeper ache in your soul. The invisible weight of a story you're living that no one seems to read. The longing to be known, truly known, not for what you do but for the person underneath who is sometimes just… tired.
This ache makes sense. It’s the human cost of moving through a world that often sees surfaces. You’re not being dramatic or too sensitive for carrying this. The weight is real because the desire to be seen is real. It’s woven into you, this need for a witness to your life—to the victories no one cheered and the defeats you bore alone.
The thing you’re most afraid of? That your cry gets lost in the noise, that your particular ache is just static in an overwhelming universe. Listen: 'You, LORD, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry.' That’s not a general broadcast. It’s a direct line. Your desire—the specific, unnamed longing in your chest right now—is heard. Your cry—the one you can’t even put into words—is listened to. Not archived, not noted for later review. Heard. And in the hearing, something shifts. The invisible weight you carry isn’t dismissed; it’s seen. It’s held. The ache isn’t a problem to be solved in isolation; it’s being cradled in a kindness that knew it was there all along.
This changes the atmosphere. The loneliness of the weight dissipates because you are no longer its sole bearer. The ache transforms from a sign of lack into a point of connection. You are not invisible. You are attended to. Your story has a devoted reader. Your heart has a patient listener. The burden of explaining yourself, of making yourself legible to the world, can drop. You are already understood, down to the silent syllables of your soul.
Let that settle. No response needed.
A prayer for today
'You hear the desire of the afflicted.' This is the desire, God. The one I can't fully name. The ache to be known. I'm bringing it to You—the invisible weight, the story I fear is untold. You are listening to my cry. Not the polished version. The raw, silent one. Thank You that I don't have to translate this ache into perfect words for You to get it. You are already holding it. I am already heard. I am already seen. In this truth, my soul finds its landing place. Amen.
