Psalm 116:6
“The LORD protects the unwary; when I was brought low, he saved me.”
You want to collapse, but you also can't sit still. The need to be done and the urge to keep going are wrestling inside your chest, and neither one is winning. That heavy, familiar weight is back—the one that makes each breath feel like a conscious effort, like you're remembering how to do something that should be automatic.
It makes sense that you'd feel this way. The pressure to perform, to appear unwary when you're actually fraying at the edges, is its own kind of exhaustion. You've been carrying the belief that vigilance is required, that if you just pay enough attention, you can prevent the next stumble. But here's what's true, right now, in this breath: a hand is already reaching for that weight. Your tightness is already beginning to ease, not because you figured out how to make it happen, but because it's being done for you.
The scripture doesn't say, 'The Lord protects those who have it all together.' It says, 'The LORD protects the unwary.' When you were brought low—when the pressure mounted and you had nothing left—that's when you were saved. This isn't a reward for perfect performance; it's a rescue operation for the overwhelmed. The hand reaching isn't waiting for you to signal for help. It's already there, fingers brushing against the burden, applying a gentle, counter-pressure that says, 'I've got this.'
Right now, something is loosening. The clenched muscle of your soul, the one you've been flexing all day to hold everything up, is being invited to soften. You don't have to manufacture the relief. You don't have to talk yourself into feeling better. The protection is already in motion. The saving is already underway. You are, in this very moment, being brought from low to held.
So feel it. The slight give in the tension. The millimeter of space where the weight used to sit. You are allowed to stop holding your breath. You are allowed to let your guard down. The work of keeping yourself safe was never yours to begin with. Your only job here is to notice the loosening, and to breathe into the new space being made.
A prayer for today
Brought low. That's where I am. You see the exact contour of this weight on my chest. I'm tired of being the wary one, the one who has to watch for every stumble. Thank You that Your protection isn't something I earn by paying attention. It finds me in my unawareness. Your hand is reaching. I feel the pressure beginning to shift. The tightness in my lungs is easing because You are saving me. I am protected. I am saved. I am breathing again, and the air is a gift. That's all. Thank You. Amen.
