Psalm 127:2
“In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves.”
The screen dims. The last notification has been swiped away. Your body is still, but behind your eyes the frantic chase continues. Replaying the conversation. Reworking the problem. Searching for the answer that would finally make everything settle.
That chase feels necessary. Like if you just think hard enough, run the tape one more time, you'll earn the rest you need. But you can't think your way into sleep. That's not how it works.
Here's what the scripture says plainly: 'In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves.' The word is grants. Not rewards. Not gives-once-you've-finished. Grants—the way a king gives something freely to someone he cares about. Sleep isn't the prize at the end of a solved problem. God gives it to you because you are loved, and for no other reason. The chase is already over. You don't have to earn your way into rest tonight.
So let the replay stop. The problem will still be there in the morning, and God will still be there with it. Right now, His gift is a quiet mind and closed eyes. Receive it.
A prayer for today
Thank You for this quiet. For the gift of a stopped clock and a mind that is finally, mercifully, allowed to be still. The chase is over. You ended it. I am handing You the endless replay—the conversation, the worry, the unsolved thing. I am placing it in Your hands, which are already holding it. I don't have to guard it anymore. You are granting the sleep Your love promises. My part is to receive this gift of stillness. To let my breathing slow, knowing Your watchfulness never does. I am loved. Therefore, I can rest. That is the whole truth tonight. Amen.
