Matthew 6:26

“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”

You keep a running tally. What you gave today — your time, your effort, your patience — set against what came back: recognition, rest, a simple thank-you. When the numbers don't balance, a quiet fear kicks in: maybe you didn't do enough. Maybe you are not enough. It makes sense. Most of life runs on that math.

Jesus interrupts it with a bird. Look at the birds of the air — they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? The bird does not produce. It doesn't file a report or justify its existence by the day's output. And it is fed. Cared for. Provided for. Then Jesus draws the line directly to you: you are worth far more than they are. That isn't a consolation prize for trying hard enough — it is a statement about what you are, before you did anything today.

Your value was settled before you opened your eyes this morning. It doesn't go up when you accomplish something and down when you don't. God looks at you the way he looks at that bird on a branch — and says you matter more. The tally you've been running? You can close the books. The work of proving your worth was never yours to do.

A prayer for today

What a relief that my worth was never a math problem. Thank You that the exhausting equation of what I give and what I get doesn't define me. You have already declared my value, and it's settled. I'm tired of keeping score. The running tally is full, and I want to close the book for good. You see the birds and feed them without their striving. I am held in that same sure, providing care. My value isn't in my hands; it's in Yours. So tonight, I receive the gift. I am valuable because You say so. That is more than enough. Amen.
