Psalm 69:1-2
“Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck. I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold. I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me.”
'I'm drowning.' The thought surfaces, quiet and certain. Not in a panic, but with the heavy resignation of someone who's been treading water for too long. The emails are a flood. The expectations are a current pulling you under. The to-do list is a weight around your ankles. You're not being dramatic. You're just naming what's true.
Your weariness makes perfect sense. It's the logical, human response to deep waters that have been rising for weeks. Of course you feel like you're sinking. Of course you can't find solid ground. You've been in the miry depths, where every step is a struggle. The fatigue you carry isn't a sign you're failing; it's proof you've been fighting to stay afloat.
'Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck. I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold.' That's not a suggestion—it's an invitation with your name on it. An invitation to stop pretending you're fine on the shore when you're actually neck-deep. An invitation to stop searching for a foothold you'll never find on your own. The prayer isn't, 'God, give me stronger legs.' It's, 'God, the water is over my head.' And right there, in the admission of drowning, is where the rescue begins. Not by pulling you out immediately, but by a hand finding yours in the dark, murky water. A steadying grip. A presence that says, 'I am here in the flood with you. You are not alone in the deep.'
The hand isn't asking you to swim harder. It's just holding on. Letting you feel anchored in the chaos. Letting your frantic kicking slow because something else is bearing your weight. The waters might not recede tonight. But you are met. You are held. You are not sinking alone.
So stop fighting the current for just a moment. Let your body go still. Feel the solid, gentle pull of that hand keeping your head above water. You don't have to find the shore right now. You just have to stop trying to save yourself. Let the hand hold you. It's allowed. You're safe here.
A prayer for today
Drowning. That's the honest word. The water is over my head, God. I have no foothold. I'm tired of treading. I'm bringing You the flood—the overwhelm, the pressure, the feeling of being pulled under. I'm not asking for the waters to part instantly. I'm just saying: I am here in the deep. And You are here with me. Your hand is already steadying mine in the dark water. You are holding me up. I am anchored. I am not sinking alone. Thank You for meeting me right where I am, without demanding I swim to shore first. That is enough. I am held. Amen.
