Psalm 127:2
“In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves.”
The pillow is cool. The ceiling is a blank screen for your racing thoughts. Somewhere, a clock ticks, measuring the silence you can't seem to enter. Your body is here, in the dark, but your mind is still running laps, replaying the day, pre-living tomorrow. The switch won't flip. Rest feels like a destination you can't find on the map.
The frustration makes sense. The ache for quiet is real. You're not broken for lying here awake; you're human in a world that rarely stops. The belief that sleep is a prize you must earn by being tired enough, by thinking the right thoughts, by finally getting everything done—it's a heavy weight on a tired soul.
Right now, in this breath, listen to a different rhythm. The psalmist wrote it down centuries ago: 'In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves.' Did you catch the verb? He *grants*. It's a gift granted, not a trophy won. Your worthiness for this settled gift isn't tied to your productivity or your ability to quiet the storm inside. It's tied to a simple, unchanging fact: you are loved. The striving for rest is already finished. The lullaby has already been sung over you.
This isn't a technique to master. It's a reality to sink into. The peace that ushers in sleep isn't something you manufacture from your own exhausted resources. It arrives for you, carried on the promise of a love that doesn't keep score. You don't have to find it, chase it, or convince your body to accept it. It finds you. It wraps around the noise and says, 'Hush.' The door to rest wasn't locked; it was always open, waiting for you to stop knocking and simply lean against it.
Is sleep yours to command? No. But is it yours to receive? The answer hasn't changed. Yes.
A prayer for today
My breath feels shallow. My thoughts are a tangled knot. You see the exhaustion I can't seem to shake. I'm bringing You the lie that I must earn my way into quiet. Thank You that the truth is so much simpler. You are the giver. I am the receiver. You grant sleep. You are granting peace right now, in this tangled-up moment. I don't have to untie the knot myself. I am being held in the dark, loved without condition. The work is done. The gift is settled. I am receiving. That is all. Amen.
