Psalm 121:3-4

“He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.”

Notice the tension in your body right now. The tightness across your forehead. The slight clench in your jaw you didn't realize was there. Your eyes are tired, but your thoughts are running laps in the dark. The house is quiet, but inside your head, it's anything but. Night has fallen, but the switch for your mind and body is stuck in the 'on' position, leaving you staring at the ceiling, desperate for a rest that feels just out of reach.

Your watchful hours are being held. You don't have to justify them or apologize for them. The scripture for this restless night is simple and solid: 'He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.' This isn't a nice idea. It's architecture. It's the foundation under your spinning thoughts. The vigil is kept. The guard never sleeps. While you lie there counting worries instead of sheep, there is a kindness—an unearned gift—that is wide awake and on duty. Your foot will not slip because the ground beneath you is held steady. Your mind can race, but you are not running alone. The One who keeps the stars in place is keeping you.

So what does that mean for your restless body, for the thoughts that won't line up and be quiet? It means the weight of staying alert, of keeping your own watch through the dark hours, was never yours to carry. That job is already filled, permanently, by a love that doesn't take shifts or call in sick. Your watchful hours are received. They are seen and known and held in a wakefulness that will never, ever tire. This truth is a deep breath for your soul. You can close your eyes. The guard never does. The protection, the safety, the steady watch—it continues without your effort, without your white-knuckled attention. It operates on a different kind of power, one that never drains its battery.

Let that settle. No response needed.

A prayer for today

I'm bringing this to You—the buzzing mind, the body that won't settle, the vigil I'm too tired to keep. My watchful hours feel heavy. But You say the watch is Yours. You never slumber. You never sleep. So here, in this dark, I stop trying to stand guard. I am guarded. The job is filled. My racing thoughts are met by Your unwavering attention. My tired body is held in Your wakeful kindness. Thank You that I don't have to stay alert for You to be alert for me. The night is already watched. I am already kept. I am safe to close my eyes. Amen.
