Isaiah 43:1
“But now, this is what the LORD says— he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: 'Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.'”
You’re scrolling through the list again. The one in your head. The names of people who seem to have it figured out, the places you feel you don’t quite fit, the roles you’re still auditioning for. The cursor blinks on a blank space where you keep typing your name, then deleting it, unsure if it belongs. The noise of comparison is a dull roar tonight, making your own identity feel like a question mark.
That ache of not measuring up? The whisper that says you’re an outsider looking in? It makes sense. In a world that often feels like a crowded room where everyone else got the memo, feeling like a stranger is a natural reaction. You don’t have to argue with that feeling or shove it down. It’s allowed to exist, even as something truer exists beneath it.
'Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.' That’s not a suggestion—it’s an invitation with your name permanently engraved on it. Before you ever typed your name into that blank space, it was already etched on a secured roster. You are not a last-minute addition or a provisional member. Your place was held before the room was ever built. Think of it: a summoned guest of honor, not for something you did, but simply because of who you are to the One who formed you. This is an irrevocable membership. The protections that come with it—belonging, safety, being claimed—silence every doubt that shouts you don’t belong. Their confusion about you can’t change this fact. You were called long before their words began.
So right here, in the middle of the scrolling and the questioning, your belonging isn’t up for debate. It’s the foundation. This moment. This breath. You are a name on a list that cannot be erased, held by a love that does not waver. You are already home.
A prayer for today
Naming it: the feeling of being an outsider. Naming the truer thing: You have summoned me. God, when the noise of comparison gets loud and my own name feels unfamiliar on my tongue, remind me that You spoke it first. I am not trying to earn a spot on Your list; I am resting in the fact that my name is already there, permanently etched. You are holding this identity for me when I feel I’ve lost it. I am held in that belonging. Thank You that this membership is sealed, not by my grip, but by Yours. Tonight, that is the only roster that matters. Amen.
