Psalm 94:19

“When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.”

You're staring at the ceiling again. Or maybe it's the phone screen in the dark. Your mind keeps pulling up the next worry before you've even finished with the last one—what if this, what if that—like a loop you can't find the off switch for. You've tried to calm down. It didn't work. And now you feel like something is wrong with you for not being able to stop.

Nothing is wrong with you. When the path ahead feels uncertain, your brain does exactly what it's wired to do: scan for danger. The looping isn't a failure. It's just your mind trying to protect you—badly, exhaustingly, but sincerely.

Here's what the psalmist knew: "When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy." Notice what he didn't say. He didn't say the anxiety stopped first. He didn't say he finally calmed down and then comfort arrived. The anxiety was great—his word, not a small thing—and right in the middle of it, consolation came. Not after. During.

That's the answer to why your thoughts won't stop on command: stopping them isn't what's required. God's comfort doesn't wait for your mind to go quiet. It meets you in the noise. The racing thoughts can keep going, and the consolation is still here. You don't have to fix yourself before you're cared for.

A prayer for today

Thank You for this breath, this anchor in the storm of my own thinking. My mind is a room with too many windows, and every 'what if' is a draft I can't seem to shut out. I'm bringing the chaos to You—the scenarios, the fears, the endless loop of tomorrows. You are not asking me to organize the noise. You are here, in the center of it. Your consolation is arriving, a deep and quiet joy that doesn't depend on my understanding. I am held. The thoughts can race, but I am still. I am safe because You are here, and Your presence is the only certainty I need tonight. That is enough. Amen.
