Ecclesiastes 1:9

“What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.”

You want your life to feel significant, but the days keep coming in the same shape. Folding the same laundry, driving the same route, answering the same emails. The dream of something new bumps against the reality of your daily rounds. How can you feel both deeply called and utterly mundane at the same time?

What if that ache isn't a sign you're doing it wrong? The feeling that there must be more makes sense when you're living in the rhythm of sunrises and sunsets, tasks and rest.

"What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun." The ancient teacher isn't despairing here. He is standing in solidarity with you. Every human being who has ever lived has known this same tension between the epic and the everyday. You are not behind. You are not broken. You are human.

And that scripture carries one more gift: permission to stop measuring your life by novelty. Your significance isn't made in breakthrough moments. It's already present in the faithful, quiet showing up — the meal made, the promise kept, the person cared for. That is not a distraction from a meaningful life. That is what a meaningful life is made of.

Your ordinary days matter because you are in them.

A prayer for today

Here I am. In the middle of the same-old, same-old. The quiet weight of my daily rounds is real. I'm bringing it to You—the repetition, the longing, the feeling that it might not matter. Thank You that my life doesn't have to be a series of new things to be significant. Thank You that this rhythm I'm in—the waking, the working, the resting—is known and held by You. You are in the pattern. You are making my faithfulness beautiful. I am held within this cycle. I am rooted by this repetition. My ordinary is being made holy by Your presence in it. That is enough for today. Amen.
